Hello my friends,
I am writing my weekly blog at the moment, on my bed in my flanny pjs, listening to the traffic in the light morning rain that is around.. ah nice to be home. Lucky I love traffic since I live on the Highway.
Today I wanted to write about the new energy that is flowing in our area.
I have lived here for a mere pin drop in time, compared to others who have been here for generations, True Locals. However I consider myself to be a “ring-in” local now, after around six years here, experiencing the people, places and seasons that make up our special little piece of the world.
Whilst at Wintermoon Music Festival recently, I was very interested to hear that the Calen District State College, our prep to year 12 school, has not held a school fete in over ten years.
This amazes me really. I thought that in rural areas the school fete would be one event to bring the community together, and raise much-needed funds for the school.
Great news though. This year there will be a school fete!
Friday May 31st, 2013 5pm-9pm
With some hardworking local Mums, Dads, teachers, school community and business support, a fantastic day looks to be had by all.
Unlike in past years, sponsors have been found to help cover costs, so more funds go back to the school.
This will be a great opportunity for the locals to have a catch up. You can let the kids go on ride after ride thanks to the pre-paid arm bands available:
- Unlimited use of all rides for $20 per school aged child / $10 for non-school aged children.
- Every child who pre-purchases an arm band goes into the lucky door prizes draw
- Pre-purchase arm bands from Calen School (49497333)
- Purchase of arm bands on the night will cost $25 per child.
- Individual rides on the night will be available for $5 per child per ride.
Let’s face it, kids don’t usually want to go on rides just the once!
We don’t have bottomless purses and wallets to keep handing over cash. Even the so-called rich miners in our area have bills and mortgages, and running kids and cars can cost a fortune. But I will save that subject for another blog. Note to self!
At Wintermoon some enterprising young entrepreneur kids I know, were on selling their purchased lucky dip items to other kids, to make a profit.
They created a craze for the little army guys inside the lucky dip prize, which other kids wanted too. They sold them separately, purchased more lucky dips and kept the extra cash. This did not go on for long, but was fascinating none the less.
I enjoyed watching their creative energy, endlessly flowing. Ideas to busk, re-structure a product, or just nag us all for more money to create an income. Can’t wait to watch these young local lads grow up.
But back to the School fete.
The event will obviously be held at the school.
McIntyre Street, Calen.
Just off the Bruce highway if you are passing by.
Not far off your track at all. You can also check out the rebuild of the Calen Hotel on the way past. Keep reading this blog post for latest pics.
I was pleasantly surprised to see some different events being held at the fete. Not just your usual commercial rides.
- Bottle Stall – buy a ticket and match it up with a bottle filled with goodies.
- Lob-a-choc – throw a 20c piece onto a pool covered with wire and has chocolates on top of the wire. If it lands on a chocolate, you win the chocolate.
- Cake and Plant stall.
- Trash and Treasure stall / 2nd hand book stall.
- Show Bags and Glow Sticks Stall.
- Slushy and Fairy Floss Stall.
- Splat a rat – put a rat down a pipe and try to splat it when it comes out the other end….Um I am assuming they are not live rats???
- Bottle Toss – A bottle with money in it. Person who throws a dollar coin closest to the bottle wins the money.
- Sponge throw – teachers have face poking through a board and a wet sponge gets thrown at them…..I’m sure all the kids will be lining up for this one!
- German Sausage stall.
- Fishing lure game – flick a lure into a hole in a piece of board and win a prize
Ham Wheel raffles – 10 raffles with prizes of vouchers for meat, hams and seafood
Main raffle: 1st prize – trolley load of groceries; 2nd prize 2 nights on a powered site at Big 4 Adventure Whitsunday, 3rd Prize is a 105 piece tool kit donated by Bunnings.
Rides on the night are from Let’s Jump Mackay: Bungee Run; jumping castle; giant dry slide and the train (the train is owned by the School and pulled around by the Kubota mower)
BBQ & Bar facilities Since we have no pub yet, great opportunity for a beer and a chat.
The Grand Finale: 7 pm Fireworks Display to finish of a perfect day.
Thanks to all the Sponsors. Great job!
Special mention goes to Gold Sponsors Zined Group who are rebuilding the Calen Hotel. Thanks to Deniz Mete… ( Deniz/zineD) get it? Nice play on your name there. Very clever.
Big thanks also to the other Gold Sponsors. Caruana Holdings our local drill and blast experts working hard up on Barren Creek Road.

Update on the much awaited Calen Hotel Rebuild
I popped in today for a look over the site. Wow it’s come a long way since they started putting the frames up just last week. Many people ask me:
“Hows the pub going? Have they started yet?”
Now, I can proudly tell them work is well on the way, and Santa, although a little bedraggled is overseeing the building progress!!
Speaking to Rick from Zined Group, I learned that the roof will soon be going on. A few plumbing issues seem to be sorted out now, so the concrete floor can be laid. After that it will be all go on the inside.
Another refreshing energy change is our local Retra Vision electrical shop has changed over to Leading Appliances.
The shop is right next door to the Calen Hotel in McIntyre Street, with a fresh new coat of paint and signage. I am sure Brett and the team will continue to give us all great service and competitive prices. Let’s try to shop local when we can and support our community.
In closing I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your positive vibe on the website and what we are trying to achieve.
I love this area, and am passionate about promoting great times to be had here, and keeping interested people updated on the local happenings. Especially for those who are half way around the world, like our beloved backpackers, or interstate, like my Dad for example.
The focus so far has been on Kolijo and Calen, but as we progress watch out for more happenings and history and interesting links for the other towns under our umbrella area.
This is to show how the water level changes over the year. I must say though that it is a very scary endeavor with trucks whizzing by. What a shame there is not a foot bridge for pedestrians. I believe there was a campaign a while back, but it obviously failed because we still have to risk life and limb! Hang on and be sensible.
Look out for the new flyers when you are out and about. Thanks to Shannon my new personal assistant for helping me with the design, and much more. It’s great to have some help and share the journey and energy that is KolijoRiverHouse.com
